Artist’s Statement
I am a British artist working primarily with painting and drawing. My practice begins with observational drawing, often made in natural environments such as gardens, parks, and dramatic landscapes in the UK and abroad. These drawings act as a starting point for layered reworking in paint, where imagery shifts between observation, memory, and abstraction.
My work is rooted in gesture, rhythm, and material sensitivity, exploring how bodily movement translates into surface. Through processes of reworking, erasure, and accumulation, I build paintings that hold a tension between control and release, structure and dissolution.
I am interested in how landscape becomes internalised through experience, where place is remembered not as a fixed image but as sensation, atmosphere, and emotional residue. Colour is central to this, often used to intensify, disrupt, or dissolve spatial perception rather than describe it.
My approach draws on traditions of expressive abstraction, with drawing remaining present within painting as a trace of thought and movement. Across my practice I am developing a visual language that connects landscape, memory, and the body, where painting becomes a process of re-seeing rather than simply depicting.
